Larimar is a rare blue gemstone found only in the Dominican Republic, known for its striking blue color and unique marbling patterns that resemble the Caribbean Sea. It is a variety of the mineral pectolite and is highly valued for its beauty and limited geographic occurrence.
Larimar is primarily composed of sodium calcium silicate. The blue coloration is due to the presence of copper, which substitutes for calcium during its formation in volcanic rock cavities. Larimar is ONLY found in a small volcanic region near Barahona, Dominican Republic. Mining involves narrow, hand-dug tunnels, making the extraction process labor-intensive and challenging.
